SUNSET PICNIC IN MENORCA:HOW TO EXPERIENCE A BERENETA
A sunset picnic in Menorca is not just about watching the sun go down. It’s one of the most simple and authentic experiences on the island.
It’s about understanding the moment. Knowing when to move, where to go and how to experience the island the way locals do. In Menorca, we call this a bereneta: a moment between afternoon and evening where you sit down, share some food and let the day slowly come to an end.
If you’re looking for things to do in Menorca at sunset, this is probably the most local way to experience it.

The place
The best spots are not the most famous ones. In fact, they are often the ones you would avoid if you were just looking for a photo.
A good bereneta is very simple: easy access, the sea nearby and as few people as possible. Places like Punta Nati or Pont d’en Gil can be spectacular for sunsets, but they are made for looking, not for staying. They are usually crowded and don’t allow you to create that calm atmosphere that defines the experience.
Closed coves don’t work particularly well either. The light disappears quickly and the mood fades too soon. It’s better to look for open spaces, with some air, where the sky has presence. But even this is secondary. A local is not chasing the perfect sunset. You don’t need to see the sun touching the sea.
What matters is feeling good.
The wind
In Menorca, everything starts here. Before deciding where to go, you check where the wind is coming from. It’s automatic. It affects the sea, your comfort and something as simple as whether you’ll enjoy it or not.
The wind can bring jellyfish, create waves or turn a perfect spot into the wrong one. That’s why changing sides of the island depending on the day is part of the plan.
In summer, this matters even more than it seems. Not just for comfort, but for the condition of the water. The same place can be perfect one day and full of jellyfish the next.
That’s why, instead of having a fixed location, you adapt. On an island where everything is less than 40 minutes away, choosing the right side changes everything.
Reading the wind
Use the island itself as a natural wind barrier.
If the sea is rough, it’s probably not the right spot.
The wind usually drops in the evening. That’s when it gets good.

What to bring
A bereneta is simple, but it’s not improvised.
There is always something to eat, something to drink and, if done properly, something to sit on. This last part changes the experience completely. It’s not the same to sit on the sand as it is to sit around a table, share food and stretch the moment.
In Menorca, there’s also a clear way of doing it. The food is usually local, made to share and doesn’t require preparation on site.
Cheese from the island — semi-cured or aged — sobrasada, carnixua or a freshly baked coca are common. You might also find formatjades, small traditional savoury pastries, or something sweet depending on the season.
Everything is easy to eat, relaxed and without complications. To drink, the classic is a pomada: Xoriguer gin with lemonade. Fresh, simple and deeply tied to the island. In the end, it’s not about making it perfect, but about having just enough to feel good.
Sit down, share, and let the day fade away.
The basket
Bread with tomato, cheese or anything cold. Nothing that needs cooking.
Wine, beer or something fresh to enjoy the moment.
A towel or, even better, chairs for more comfort.
Foldable if possible. It completely changes the experience.
Only if you want to extend the moment a little longer.
